The Prince of Peace

Violent marches for peace are a common fact today. Our cities are being attacked, public buildings bombed, and the police assaulted by our modern peace lovers. Such peace as these men have to offer is another word for slavery.
   The Bible makes clear that peace is not a matter of politics but of religion, more specifically, of Jesus Christ. Peace is a product of an inward character; it goes together with righteousness and truth.
   To illustrate: a hundred years ago, bank messengers carried heavy canvas bags of gold coins up and down Wall Street. When a bag broke, the crowd would form a circle around the area, until the messenger picked up every piece. A man bending over when a bag broke received a boot in the rear.
   Today, it would not be safe, of course, to transport bags of gold coins that way. Moreover, if such a bag broke now, there would be a mass scramble to pick up the gold and run.
   The difference is the loss of Christian faith and character. There is neither peace nor security in the world today, because there is neither peace nor righteousness in the lives of men.
   Our Lord declared that a "good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit" (Matt. 7:17). A corrupt humanity is bringing forth corruption. We have no right to expect peace from it.
   In the prophecy of the coming of Christ, Isaiah declared that there would be no end to the increase of Christ's peace (Isa. 9:7). All other forms of peace, because they are fraudulent and are never true peace, shall fail. The peace of Christ, as it conquers man after man, can alone create true order and justice. The joyful message of Christmas is still the same, therefore, a promise of peace. "God rest you merry, gentlemen, Let nothing you dismay. Remember Christ our Savior Was born on Christmas day, to save us all from Satan's pow'r When we were gone astray; O tidings of comfort and joy."
   We have gone astray again. Let us return to the Prince of Peace, who is our only Savior. No peace marches, politicians, educators, or others can make us into a regenerated people. This Christ can do, and He shall prevail. "O tidings of comfort and joy."

Birth of the King

   The birth of a king has lost most of its meaning in our day, because the few kings remaining are mainly figureheads. In earlier days, it was, however, a momentous event. Whenever a son was born to a king, the entire kingdom celebrated with a joy our holidays today do not have.
   Why was the birth of a king's son so great an event to the poorest man of the realm, and so great a cause for rejoicing? It meant, very simply, that a protector and defender was born, someone who in the days ahead would provide the leadership, unifying force, and strength to repel all enemies, suppress criminals within the realm, and enforce justice. A kingdom without an heir to the throne had an uncertain future. Men being sinners, the kingdom would face internal and external troubles if no king reigned to enforce justice. The succession being uncertain, the kingdom would risk civil war.
   The term "enforce justice" tells us much. Man is a sinner, and he is by nature lawless unless he is regenerated by Jesus Christ. Justice thus must be "enforced," that is, put into operation by force, because otherwise lawlessness and injustice will prevail. If there is no forceful enactment of justice, there is no justice. This is the grim fact people once knew and are now forgetting.
   This tells us too what the Scripture means when it speaks of Christ as King, hailed King from His very birth.The Gospel of Matthew gives us His royal genealogy in its first chapter. Revelation 17:14 tells us that He is the universal King, " for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings."
   When we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, we thus celebrate the birth of one who is ordained to right every wrong, overthrow every enemy, and enforce justice. He will put down all enemies before time is ended, and He will reign eternally over His people. The news of His birth, and its celebration, is indeed "joy to the world," because the Lord is come who shall in the fullness of time enforce justice truly and absolutely.
   His promise is peace, not the peace of death and the graveyard, but the peace of justice and prosperity. The Virgin Mary rejoiced, declaring of the justice God and her son would finally establish: "He hath shewed
strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good thing; and the rich he hath sent empty away" (Luke 1:51-53).
   If we believe en Christ, we shall rejoice, and we shall be confident, come what may. We have a King!

The Increase of His Government and Peace

   One of the most important prophecies concerning the birth of our Lord is in Isaiah 9:6-7. Christ, eight centuries before His coming, is hailed as the "Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace," and it is declared that "the government shall be upon his shoulder." This is the first great declaration concerning Christ and all government: the ultimate and absolute government of all things shall belong to Christ. The second great declaration is that "[o]f the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end." Christ, coming into a sinful and rebellious world to establish His dominion as Lord and Savior, will in the face of all enmity and warfare increase His power, government, and peace.
   Next, we are told exactly how this shall be done: He shall "establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever," or, as the Berkeley Version translates it, "[I]t is firmly established and supported in justice and righteousness from now on and forever."
   Christ came into the world as the great prophet, priest, and king. As prophet, He speaks for God; as priest, He is man´s savior and advocate with the Father; as king, He rules over the world.
   The world is in rebellion against that government. From these rebels and revolutionists, we hear much talk about "peace," and a great deal of hostility to government. But Isaiah tied the two together: "Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end." True peace, in other words, is a product of true government. When there is true law and order, then there is also true peace. Abolish law and order, and you abolish peace and create a situation of revolutionary warfare and anarchy. By abandoning Christ as Savior and King, by abandoning His government and peace, we are moving into a world of perpetual warfare. We are engaged in "perpetual warfare for perpetual peace" because we are seeking it without Christ. The old hymn states it best:

   Joy to the world!
   The Lord is come:
   Let earth receive her King.

   But the invitation of the song is then personal: "Let every heart prepare Him room." We all long for godly law and order, for His government and peace. -it must begin first of all in our own hearts. Most people are waiting for their husbands, wives, children, neighbors, for all the rest of the world to be Christian, so they can enjoy the luxury and peace of a godly world without any personal conversion, but there is no peace, says Scripture, to the wicked. But every man can know the peace of His government here and now, and in the face of all problems, if their hearts prepare Him room.

    Que el gozo
alrededor como los ríos fluyan;
    a
caudal, y todavía aumente;

Christ's Birth: The Sign of Victory - Part III

   The joy of the Christmas season is the joy of triumph, the joy that the King has come, and He reigns. It is "joy to the world," because "the Savior reigns." Hence the summons, "Dance, thou universe," or as Isaac Watts said, "heaven and nature sing." Again, in Watt's words,

  Let joy around like rivers flow;
  Flow on, and still increase;
  Spread o'er the glad earth
  At Immanuel's birth--
  For heaven are earth are at peace.

History was no picnic in Watt's day, but he knew that for those who are in Christ, "heaven and earth are at peace," and, as the people of Christ, we establish that peace on earth through our faithfulness.
   How then do we become the people of the Prince of Peace? He is our Peace, and we proclaim Him as the Man of Peace. In Paul's words, "But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. for he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us" (Eph. 2:13-14), i.e., between God and man. The reign of peace begins with peace with God through Jesus Christ.
   The establishment of that peace then is the application of God's law-word to every area of life and thought. God's law teaches us how to live in peace with Him, and at peace with our neighbor. It teaches us how to be at peace with the earth, by keeping God's laws in relation to it.
   Because Christ is our Sabbath rest (Hebrews 4:1-16), we are able to rest in a restless world. We have peace in a war-sick age, because "This man shall be the peace" (Micah 5:5).
   We have in God's law the prescription for the ills of men and nations, and in the incarnate Son of God the healer with power, who enables men to rise up and walk in obedience to His law.
   The church cannot honestly celebrate Christ birth, Christmas, and sing the triumphant carols, and then turn its back on the mandate to exercise dominion and to be "more than conquerors."
   From the early church, The Order of the Orthros, comes this prayer: "By night our spirit watched early unto Thee, O God, for Thy precepts are light. Teach us, O God, Thy righteousness, Thy commandments, and Thine ordinances; enlighten the eyes of our understandings, lest at any time we sleep unto death in sins; dispel all gloom from our hearts; bestow on us the Sun of Righteousness; and unassailed do thou keep our life, in the seal of Thy Holy Spirit; direct our steps into the way of peace; grant us to behold the dawn and the day in exultation, that to Thee we may send up our morning prayers. For Thine is the might, and Thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now, and ever, and unto the ages of the ages. Amen."

Christ's Birth: The Sign of Victory Part II

   History thus is a great shaking, a continual earthquake. God the King so orders all things that men cannot rest in their sins. His judgments shake and shatter the nations in their smug self-satisfaction with their sins. "There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked" (Isa. 57:21). The present turmoil of history witnesses to the presence of God the Lord. He is shaking and dispossessing the peoples of our time for their lawlessness. He who refused to spared either Israel or Judah, no less than Assyria, will not spare today an unrepentant Russia, Europe, or America. His judgements bring us closer to our triumph in and through Him. Therefore, rejoice.
   Among the most beautiful and resounding words from the liturgy of the Presanctified of the early church are these concerning the birth of our Lord:
   "The Virgin, today, cometh into a cave to bring forth ineffably the Word that is before the ages. Dance,  thou universe, on hearing the tidings: glory with the Angels and the Shepherds him that willed to be beheld a little Child, the God before the ages."
   "Prepare thyself, O Bethlehem, Eden is open to all; make thyself ready, O Ephratha, because in the cave the tree of life hath budded from the Virgin: for truly an intellectual Paradise is her womb become, in which is the divine plant. Whereof eating we shall live, and not, as Adam, die. Christ is born to raise the image that was formerly fallen."
   These early Christians believed that Christ's coming had altered history and all creation: therefore they sang, "Dance, thou universe!" Christ coming meant the death-knell of the Caesars and Romes of history, if they refused to submit to Christ the Lord. In terms of Scripture, these men saw themselves as "more than conquerors" (Rom. 8:37), as victors over the nations in Christ, not as victims. Only such a faith could and did conquer.
   Many of the errors, sins and short comings of the early church are no longer with us, but neither is their zeal, not their assurance of victory.
   Whittaker Chambers, on deserting the communists to work for the restoration of the republic, remarked sadly that he had apparently left the winning side for the losers. Too many churchmen today act as if they too joined the losers in becoming christian. Such an attitude is a denial of the incarnation and resurrection. They surrender what cannot be surrendered, the assured Kingship of Christ, and the everlasting increase of His government and sway. They assume that, because they lack zeal for Christ's Kingdom, the Lord too lacks zeal. But Isaiah tells us, concerning Christ's Kingdom and government, "The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this."
   By and large, the humanist believes that, with respect to history, death ends all. Some humanists with occultist tendencies hold that after death we live as spirits in some vague and neutral realm. This neutral realm is an undivided realm and hence without heaven or hell, defeat or victory. All too many Christians are little better. History is for them the arena of retreat and defeat, and the world to come a retirement home for the pious defeated ones. (This plainly denies Revelation 22:3, "and his servants shall serve him.") Having no dominion on earth, they see no dominion on earth, they see no dominion in the world to come.
   The glory of our Lord's birth is the glory of sure and total victory. The Virgin Mary, inspired of God, saw her Son's birth as the beginning of a great overturning: "He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree" (Luke 1:52). In the modern era, the kings of Europe banned the Magnificat from churches because of that sentence! the kings are gone, and Christ remains as Lord and King.
   Those churchmen who would deny or abolish the note of victory are as foolish as those crowned heads of Europe, and they will join them in the trash-heap of history. Christ is King: let the peoples tremble! Let none dare deny His sway.

Christ's Birth: The Sign of Victory

   One of the magnificent and resounding prophecies concerning our Lord is Isaiah 9:6-7: "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of  the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this."
   Prior to this words, Isaiah gives us a perspective on the world apart from and in rebellion against God. It is a view of darkness, evil, gloom, and stumbling in the darkness of sin and misery. Isaiah´s day was Assyria´s day of power, and Assyria's threat hung over the nations like an  imminent death sentence, The evils of history seem only to be intensifying and the darkness deepening. The origin of this darkness was the apostasy of the covenant people. Instead of being the people of dominion, they had become instead the slaves of sin. In a world of evil, the half-hearted and hypocritical sinner is no match for the dedicated sinner, even as today the inconsistent and masquerading humanists of the West are no match for the militant and more systematic humanists of the Soviet Empire. The triflers of Israel were no match for the ruthless warriors of Assyria. They were under the rod of their oppressors, but their foremost oppressor was their own sin and apostasy.
   A victory, however, was in the offing, "as in the day of Midian" (Isa. 9:4), i.e., as in the day of Gideon. Gideon's victory was emphatically supernatural. The battle was the Lord's, and the battle cry was, "The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon" (Judges 7:18)  Before Gideon could go into battle he had to recognize that the victory is of the Lord, and for His glory.
   This victory is to be more dramatic: instead of a Gideon, it will begin with a child, a wonder child and a miracle. God the Son will invade history! 'The earth is the LORD's and the fullness thereof: the world and they that dwell therein' (Ps.24:1) The earth and the peoples thereof belong to the Lord; they have fallen under the dominion of sin and are in rebellion against God the Lord. As King and Sovereign, He invades the world to recapture His possession and to make it again fully His. As against the Assyrian invader, another Invader is coming, One whose power created and ordained all things.
   A male child shall be born, "a Son is given," the heir-Son of David, God's only-begotten Son. On His shoulder is the government of all things, so that all creation is in the hollow of His land. This wonder-child's name is Immanuel, God with us (Isa. 7:14), and He is virgin-born, the new Adam and the Head of a new humanity to replace the old humanity of the fallen Adam.
   Isaiah describes this coming king: He is the Wonder of the Ages, and the great Councellor, the source of all wisdom and counsel, so that His law-word is the governing and true word for all ages and all men. This Son is also the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace. He restores peace to the world and reigns over it in peace as the great and eternal Prince and God.
   Moreover, His coming is the beginning of His reign, power, and sway, for "Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end." As King, He shall establish His reign with Justice, and His law shall govern all things for ever."
   Magnificently, this prophecy cannot fail. "The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this" Men of zeal are the doers of the world; their efforts are feeble and limited when compared with the zeal of the almighty and triune God. His zeal will perform the triumph of Christ's Kingdom!
   What this prophecy tell us plainly is that the Lord God is concerned with more than the redemption of our souls. His work of salvation does emphatically include our salvation, but it also includes His triumphant repossession of the whole creation. With Christ coming, death, resurrection, and ascension, God began the shaking of all the things which are, so that only those things which cannot be shaken may remain (Hebrews 12:26-29).

tu propio Hijo querido, engendrado, no creado,

En esto está el amor;

En esto está el poder;

En esto está la sabiduría;

amplía mi mente;

       déjame oír las buenas nuevas del gran gozo,

mis ojos elevados a un Padre reconciliado;

        ponme con el buey, el burro, el camello, la cabra,

y en él considerarme librado del pecado;

        déjame con Simeón agarrar al niño recién nacido de mi corazón.

This beautiful prayer was taken from the largely forgotten collection of the Puritan's meditations.

THE GIFT OF GIFTS

O SOURCE OF ALL GOOD,
What shall I render to thee for the gift of gifts,
   thine own dear Son, begotten, not created,
   my redeemer, proxy, surety, substitute,
   his self-emptying incomprehensible,
   his infinity of love beyond the heart's grasp.
Herein is wonder of wonders:
  he came below to raise me above,
  was born like me that I might become like him.
Herein is love;
  when I cannot rise to him he draws near on wings of grace,
  to raise me to himself.
Herein is power;
   when Deity and humanity were infinitely apart
   he united them in indissoluble unity, the uncreate and the created,
Herein is wisdom;
   When I was undone, with no will to return to him,
                        and no intellect to devise recovery,
    he came, God-incarnate, to save me to the uttermost,
               as man to die my death,
                           to shed satisfying blood on my behalf,
                           to work out a perfect righteousness for me.
O God, take me in spirit to the watchful shepherds, and
       enlarge my mind;
let me hear good tidings of great joy,
   and hearing, believe, rejoice, praise, adore,
   my conscience bathed in an ocean of repose,
   my eyes uplifted to a reconciled Father;
place me with ox, ass, camel, goat,
   to look with them upon my redeemer's face,
   and in him account myself delivered from sin;
let me with Simeon clap the new-born child to my heart.
   embrace him with undying faith,
   exulting that he is mine and I am his.
In him thou hast given me so much that heaven can give no more."
