Christ's Birth: The Sign of Victory Part II

History thus is a great shaking, a continual earthquake. God the King so orders all things that men cannot rest in their sins. His judgments shake and shatter the nations in their smug self-satisfaction with their sins. "There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked" (Isa. 57:21). The present turmoil of history witnesses to the presence of God the Lord. He is shaking and dispossessing the peoples of our time for their lawlessness. He who refused to spared either Israel or Judah, no less than Assyria, will not spare today an unrepentant Russia, Europe, or America. His judgements bring us closer to our triumph in and through Him. Therefore, rejoice.
Among the most beautiful and resounding words from the liturgy of the Presanctified of the early church are these concerning the birth of our Lord:
"The Virgin, today, cometh into a cave to bring forth ineffably the Word that is before the ages. Dance,  thou universe, on hearing the tidings: glory with the Angels and the Shepherds him that willed to be beheld a little Child, the God before the ages."
"Prepare thyself, O Bethlehem, Eden is open to all; make thyself ready, O Ephratha, because in the cave the tree of life hath budded from the Virgin: for truly an intellectual Paradise is her womb become, in which is the divine plant. Whereof eating we shall live, and not, as Adam, die. Christ is born to raise the image that was formerly fallen."
These early Christians believed that Christ's coming had altered history and all creation: therefore they sang, "Dance, thou universe!" Christ coming meant the death-knell of the Caesars and Romes of history, if they refused to submit to Christ the Lord. In terms of Scripture, these men saw themselves as "more than conquerors" (Rom. 8:37), as victors over the nations in Christ, not as victims. Only such a faith could and did conquer.
Many of the errors, sins and short comings of the early church are no longer with us, but neither is their zeal, not their assurance of victory.
Whittaker Chambers, on deserting the communists to work for the restoration of the republic, remarked sadly that he had apparently left the winning side for the losers. Too many churchmen today act as if they too joined the losers in becoming christian. Such an attitude is a denial of the incarnation and resurrection. They surrender what cannot be surrendered, the assured Kingship of Christ, and the everlasting increase of His government and sway. They assume that, because they lack zeal for Christ's Kingdom, the Lord too lacks zeal. But Isaiah tells us, concerning Christ's Kingdom and government, "The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this."
By and large, the humanist believes that, with respect to history, death ends all. Some humanists with occultist tendencies hold that after death we live as spirits in some vague and neutral realm. This neutral realm is an undivided realm and hence without heaven or hell, defeat or victory. All too many Christians are little better. History is for them the arena of retreat and defeat, and the world to come a retirement home for the pious defeated ones. (This plainly denies Revelation 22:3, "and his servants shall serve him.") Having no dominion on earth, they see no dominion on earth, they see no dominion in the world to come.
The glory of our Lord's birth is the glory of sure and total victory. The Virgin Mary, inspired of God, saw her Son's birth as the beginning of a great overturning: "He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree" (Luke 1:52). In the modern era, the kings of Europe banned the Magnificat from churches because of that sentence! the kings are gone, and Christ remains as Lord and King.
Those churchmen who would deny or abolish the note of victory are as foolish as those crowned heads of Europe, and they will join them in the trash-heap of history. Christ is King: let the peoples tremble! Let none dare deny His sway.

THE FAITH OF RAHAB

It has distressed many people that the Bible speaks so favorably of Rahab. In some circles, to speak well of Rahab is to invite sharp criticism. Scripture, however, cites Rahab as one of the great examples of faith (Heb. 11:31). James, in fact, sees Abraham and Rahab as the two great examples of true faith (James 2:17-26).
Rahab is a "problem" to many people on two counts. First, she was a harlot. Every kind of strained exegesis has been resorted to in order to turn her into an innkeeper instead, but the Scripture is clear: she was a harlot. Second, her lie to the king of Jericho's officers is uniformly condemned by the legalists, even though it is specifically cited as a virtue by James. However, the idea that anyone who is about to violate God's law has any right to require the truth of us to further his evil is certainly not Biblical. Dabney saw this clearly.
It is important to realize that the Bible is never academic; it never provides information merely to satisfy our curiosity. In fact, it avoids satisfying our curiosity again and again, because its purpose is rather to instruct and to reshape us ever more closely into conformity to God's word, law, and image. What we are told about Rahab is thus clearly aimed at us, and particularly because she is twice single out as an example of faith for us to follow, it is necessary for us to know as precisely as possible what we are to emulate in her.
...Turning again to Rahab, it is clear that the spies found in her not only a sympathetic informant but one receptive to their faith...(Josh. 2:9-14).
...Rahab, in describing to the spies the terror in Jericho and Canaan, distinguished between two powers, the direct power of God and the indirect power of God through Israel. She declared of the first, "we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt," and of the second, that they had heard "what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites...whom ye utterly destroyed" (Josh.2:10). Rahab was clearly aware of the active presence of God, and she received the spies as the messengers of God and God's cause. The Captain of the Lord's House used these spies to save His elect daughter Rahab. These spies were thus not only Joshua's espionage agents but messengers of God. They were, in this sense, "angels unawares" to themselves and Rahab.
...Turning primarily to Rahab's response, we see that, first, she is concerned not merely with self-preservation but the preservation of her father's family, and all its members. This strong sense of the family was not always true of Canaanite culture, which had its eras of family decline as well as family strength. It does indicate the closeness of Rahab to her family.
...Second, Rahab, in citing the terror of the Canaanites over the power of Israel, does more than the Canaanites. She attributes this power to the total power of the LORD, who "is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath" (Josh. 2:11). The Canaanites were in terror, because they recognized what the Israel had done to all its enemies. The history of Israel from the Red Sea crossing to the present, a forty-year history, was familiar to them. Their recognition of the LORD's role in that series of events was not religious but superstitions. Rahab saw the matter religiously, and recognized the sovereignty of God and gave herself to His service at the risk of her life. She did not, like the people of Jericho, wait for death to come. Instead, she risked death to help the spies in order to gain life.
...Joshua kept his promise, i.e., the promise made by his agents, the spies, to Rahab...From a position of affluence, Rahab came to the position of an outcast stranger, a woman whose past came under the judgment of God's law. She could not have been ignorant of what this meant long before she took the step. The grace, however, which gave her the faith to take this step made her also an honored married woman in Israel. Like Abraham, she had moved forward in faith, and by works of faith, as seeing the invisible. As such, with Abraham, she has the honor of representing true faith, venturesome, active, and mindful in all things of God's sovereign power.
Moreover, Joshua, the book of conquest, gives us telling instances of adoption: Rahab, Caleb, and Othniel, to demonstrate that God's premise is not race but grace.

False Witness and Abiding and Abetting a Crime

According to the law, in case of perjury, the false witness was to receive the penalty sought for the accused (Deut. 19:16-21). If the penalty were death, then the false witness was to be executed.
In Christian Europe, this principle was logically extended to have other applications. If a man helped a prisoner escape from the jurisdiction of the court, or from its sentence, that same sentence was applied to him. An example of this appears in Columbus' crew on his first voyage to America. The ships had good crews of able seaman. Only four were pardoned criminals, and here there were mitigating circumstances. Although Bartolome de Torres had only accidentally killed a man in a fight, he had been sentenced to death for this manslaughter. Three of his friends had tried to help him escape from prison, but were caught, and also sentenced to death. They were pardoned by the crown and sent to sea with Columbus, and all received full pardon on their return. Two of them sailed with Columbus again, on his second voyage.

Historia de la Pascua (English)

Escritura y Comentarios

Traición
Juan 13: 12-30

Cristo estaba "
¡preocupado!"

¡Murió a propósito!

Easter History
Scripture & Comments

Betrayal
John 13: 12-30

Christ was "troubled!"  He had invested in JUDAS & even though he knew beforehand that he would betray Him, the actual act was hard to accept.  This is not to say we should never entrust ourselves to another fallen human.  It is just that that our trust must be grounded in a prior & unqualified trust in the sovereign purposes of our Sovereign Lord.

Rejection
John 15: 18-25

If we claim to be Jesus’ followers we should not be too surprised when those who are not, find our company troublesome.  When one person is trying to plant a tree and another is trying to uproot it the relationship will not be without difficulty.  The more effectively we stand for Christ and His Word in a world that is trying to erase all memory of Him, the more DANGEROUS we will be considered.  As others have said, “there is nothing more dangerous to a society that considers itself absolute than an individual with an absolute capable of judging that society!”

Trial
John 18: 28 - 19: 15

Pilate said, "I find no fault in Him!" and then turned Him over to be crucified!  So much for JUSTICE!   Jesus’ trial was an exercise in judicial manipulation.  There was no Defense; No impartial Jury & finally, not even any Guilt !  Only cowardice & manipulation!  Jury nullification is a necessary common law doctrine which acknowledges that juries have a responsibility to judge not only the facts of a case but also man’s law itself.  In that law is a product of fallen men, man’s law will be equally fallen.  A jury’s right to judge it on the basis of God’s unchanging law provides a check against those laws of men which do not comport with it.  Here we see Pilate attempt to engage in what might be called a judges nullification of an unjust trial.  But Pilate didn’t have the courage to stand against what he knew to be manipulation and Jesus was turned over to be crucified.

Mocking
Matthew 27: 24-31

Here we see the enlisted men having a little fun with a convicted “criminal,” even if unjustly so. If they had fulfilled their responsibility they would have followed the trial & refused to follow an unjust order.  But that would have probably meant others taking their place and they themselves accompanying Jesus to be crucified right along with Him.  This would have required greater courage than was expected of Pilate.  There are no little people and everyone has their level of responsibility.  The soldier’s were very afraid of Pilate’s authority and foolishly assumed that there was none higher.  The submissive character of the Object of their mocking did not indicate weakness on His part.  It indicated a purposed tolerance and love.  A tolerance with the full force of God’s sovereign power behind it!

Crucifixion
John 19: 17-24

Crucifixion was a slow & agonizing death!  It was a symbol of one under a CURSE!  Galatians 3: 13 tells us that "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, 'Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree).’”  It is important for us to remember that although Christ was unjustly convicted, He was not unjustly crucified.  The sins that put Christ on the Cross were real sins and merited eternal punishment.  Those sins were ours! Christ’s body was broken and His blood poured out in place of our own!  He died a death meant for us, which if we had attempted it in ourselves would have lasted for Eternity!

Insults
Matthew 27: 38-44

We must remember that Christ tolerated the insults that were hurled against Him. He died, but He did not die powerless.  Legions of Angels stood at the ready and upon an instants notice would quickly have dispatched His persecutors.  Jesus did not HAVE to die.  He died on purpose!  He died because His Love for His fallen people required it!
Darkness
Matthew 27: 45-49

From  12:00 noon  to 3:00 in the afternoon a great and stygian darkness covered the land.  Darkness is a symbol of God’s wrath & judgment, a wrath that was justly poured out upon Jesus.  It was at this point that Jesus entered the deepest point of His suffering.  The point when His Father turned against Him and poured out the supreme Hellish wrath that was meant for us upon His Son!  He was forsaken of the Father &, even if but for a moment, that moment was filled with the essence of Eternity.

Commital
Luke 23: 46-49

At the end of His suffering Jesus breathes His last & commits HIMSELF to the Father! Usually it must be other people who commit our bodies to the grave but here it was Jesus Himself who did so.  This again indicates a power which mere mortals can never possess!  Every aspect of Jesus’ death was in His power.

Death
John 19: 28-37

Jesus was Really Dead!  There was no Life in Him!   When the soldier thrust his spear into His side the forthcoming blood and water was a medical indication of a very real death. He did not swoon or suffer a near-death experience.  He was really dead & really dead people are never resuscitated.

Buried
John 19: 38-42

When a Head of State dies their bodies are usually put on extended public display so that mourners may pay their respects.  This Lying in State is generally reserved for Kings, Presidents and other Leaders of State.  However, it was not utilized for the Supreme Ruler of heaven and earth.  Jesus was quickly buried, without fanfare or ceremony.  Even those closest to Him thought it was over. He who had offered such promise and hope was no more.

Resurrection
Acts 2: 22-32

Satan seemed to have won the day. His great Nemesis had been killed and buried.  Jesus was in the grave & His people were still in their sins.  Satan was undoubtedly rejoicing that Death, God’s own punishment for sin, had knocked out the Only Candidate for Redeemer of the human race.  The world was in Satan’s power and mankind was lost forever.  Or so it seemed.   .   .  But as the early rays of the morning sun broke upon the third day a deep tremor was felt down the corridors of time and eternity.  The rock was moved from its place and revealed a tomb without a body.  Jesus was gone!  Satan knew that the game was up.  Jesus had died bearing the sins of the world.  Those sins merited eternal death and should have kept Him in the grave forever.  But in fact, God’s righteous love had justly paid the consequences of His wrath and Jesus exploded from the grave.  Death had not been able to hold Him!  He was physically, spiritually, and eternally alive!

Ascension
Acts 2: 33-36

The battle had been won and Satan defeated.  ALL AUTHORITY & POWER in Heaven & on Earth was given to CHRIST as he assumed His rightful seat at the Right Hand of the Father.  As King, He immediately, through the power of the Holy Spirit, began the process of extending the benefits of His death to all those for whom He had died that, although deserving eternal death, they might experience life forever more.  In Philippians 2 Paul writes,  "Therefore God also has highly exalted Him & given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, & of those on earth, & of those under the earth, And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

Good Friday is GOOD because eternal Death was turned to eternal LIFE!
