oh Jacob, y Formador tuyo, oh Israel:
No temas, porque yo te redimí;

Ahora estamos siendo forzados a frenar.

Is Anybody Out There? Social Distancing and the World's Great Loneliness

Six feet apart.
No groups of more than ten, for safety's sake.
Humankind retreats into the four corners they feel are more a house than a home.
We, the beings with souls, are doing everything we can to protect and heal our bodies.....but our hearts?
They're broke wide open, bleeding.
We'd like to think we're capable of carrying on in a context of isolation, that we are self-dependent, that the world can fall apart around us and we'll be okay.
But the lesson we'll be learning, the holy test we've just been handed has been taken from chapters we haven't bothered reading into as a society.
Connection, and the great void we call loneliness.
This isn't the first time human beings have known so great a separation.
Way back in the beginning, we are told in Genesis 3 of how the first human beings were escorted out of the Garden - ushered out of direct contact with the God they had walked with each day.
That's when they started to die, both body and soul.
For hundreds of years people made animal sacrifices - trying to buy back the relationship they lost when they chose self-dependency over a loving God who fully knows and sees us.  But their hearts weren't the only ones broken.  Their tears for the lost connection were shared by the One they longed for.
"But now, O Jacob, listen to the Lord who created you.
O Israel, the One who formed you says,
'Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you.
I have called you by name; you are Mine.' "
(Isaiah 43:1)
Christ Himself came to be our ransom, to bridge the gap in the relationship between us and God. When He went to the cross, in that final hour the words sounded from His throat "EliEli, lema sabachthani?"
Simply put - "My God, why have You abandoned me?"
In order to buy back His Bride - the Son of God had to face the horror of separation from His Father.  But by His action, by His surrender - He proclaimed to the whole wide world what distance He would go in order to get the relationship back.
And yet we wander - as humanity, as the Church, as individuals.
Somehow we think if we stay busy enough, if we fill our lives with enough stuff, book our every day in half an hour increments that maybe the gnawing ache of running away from Love won't catch up with us.
Now we are being forced to slow.  Workplaces, schools and even churches are closing.  Perhaps the world has never felt so utterly alone, so uncertain of when "normality" shall dawn again.
Technology is often labeled as a great evil, especially among older generations of Christians - and even non-Christians.  Yet here we, millions of isolated human beings confined to our communities, yet with a world at our fingertips - thanks to the creative genius given by God to those who created the internet.
The LORD has given us the ability to reach across hundreds and thousands of miles to those we love and care about.  We may not be able to make the trip to stand face to face as we planned in hope so long ago...
But we can stand together from miles apart.  By phone, letter, Skype or messaging apps.  The world can be frightening enough when we have to face it alone.  So instead of cowering in a corner wondering how we shall get by, why don't we make full use of the time given to us?
In a time where the distractions of everyday life have been overturned, let us strive for connection with God and with each other.  The world is far too lonely when we all pretend we're better off on our own.

Solitude

Back in the 1930s, a famous actress was well-known for her insistence on avoiding people. "I want to be alone" was her motto. Not surprisingly, this same actress, then and until her death, was known also as an unhappy woman.
Being in a crowd or in a group does not ensure happiness any more than being alone can give it to us. Happiness is not a product of either people or the absence of people. We cannot find happiness either by avoiding people or by mingling endlessly with people or by following the crowd..
All the same, happiness is not a product of being alone, and it is in some sense related to a life shared with others. An old French saying sums up the matter telling: "All things can be learned in solitude except character." Knowledge, wisdom, skills and much else can be gained from solitude, but not character. While character is not a social product, its testing and growth require society.
Our character is given its directions by our faith or lack of faith in the triune God. Our faith in Christ sets the direction of our growth. The extent of our growth then depends on our continuing relationship with God and man.
The Bible, from cover to cover, gives us commandments which govern our relationship to God and to man, and our sanctification, our growth in grace, holiness, peace, strength, and happiness, depend on our growth in our relationships with God and with man. There can be no sanctification in isolation from either God or man.
Not surprisingly, people who avoid God and man, who want to be "free" from religion and parental and social obligations, are also very unhappy people. They are rebelling against the very context of happiness and growth. There is a very high suicide rate among these so-called "free people" and with good reason.
There is neither growth, nor peace, nor happiness in solitude. By trying to escape from responsibility to God and to man, they are also escaping from life itself, because life is responsibility. It is a community of God and men. It is growth, and it is problems. In hell there is no community. It is the totality of solitude.
Attempts therefore to "get away from it all" are quests for death. Life is not solitude. We may die alone if we choose, but we cannot be born alone or live alone. We are a part of God's world and the community He created.

¿La Soledad...? (English)

Llega a conocerlo.
No importa si tu no puedes sentir Su presencia.

Loneliness...?

"Be still and know that He is God...

When you are lonely, too much stillness is exactly the thing seems to be laying waste your soul. Use that stillness to quiet your heart before God. Get to know Him. If He is God, He is still in charge.
Remember that you are not alone. "The Lord, He it is that doth go with thee, He will not fail thee neither forsake thee. Be strong and of good courage." Jesus promised His disciples, "Lo, I am with you always."Never mind if you cannot feel His presence. He is there, never for one minute forgetting you.
Give thanks. In times of my  greatest loneliness I have been lift it up by the promise of II Corinthians 4:17,18,"For this slight momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, because we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen." This is something to thank God for. This loneliness itself, which seems a weight, will be far outweighed by glory.
Refuse self-pity. Refuse it absolutely. It is a deadly thing with power to destroy you. Turn your thoughts to Christ who has already carried your griefs and sorrows.
Accept your loneliness as one stage of the journey that brings you to God. It will not always last.
Offer up your loneliness to God, as the little boy offered to Jesus his five loaves and two fish. God can transform it for the good of others.
Do something for somebody else. No matter who or where you are, there is something you can do, somebody who needs you. Pray that you may be an instrument of God's peace, that where is loneliness you may bring joy."
