Majoring in Minors
Back in 1951, I heard the Rev. Earl Harvey of Madera preach a very fine sermon on "Majoring in Minors." Too many Christians, he pointed out, concentrate on trifles while important matters go neglected. This he called majoring in minors.
I thought of this recently when I encountered a young pastor of superior ability who spends his time, like so many others, crusading over trifles. With the world falling apart, he gets very upset and spends time fighting over the wording of an advertisement. Another man spends time fretting over women's hairstyles and dress lengths, while still another frets over Sunday baseball and football on television.
A man who has a race to run does not stop to kill flies. His sense of priorities makes him aware that only the most pressing task can dominate his mind and time. This is not so say that some of these minor issues are not sometimes real problems. The question is not only one of priorities but also of common sense. We do not stop to dust furniture in a burning house; we try to put out the fire. Similarly, in an evil generation, our task is to proclaim God's regenerating power.
Ours is a time of crisis and urgency, and it requires urgent preaching and dedicated living. We cannot be "at ease in Zion" (Amos 6:1), nor can we take undue time for secondary or peripheral matters.
St. Paul felt this urgency in his day, declaring, "[N]ecessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, If I preach not the gospel!" (1 Cor. 9:16). Sadly, one of the rarer things today, both in pulpit and pew, is the same sense of necessity and urgency.
If we major in minors, we will nag people about dusty furniture in a burning house. If we major in the Word of God, we will call out the word of warning, the way of escape and life. If we major in trifles, we ourselves have become triflers. If we major in God's compelling Word, we become strong men and conquerors in Christ.

The Price of Salvation
There is a story about a young prince who became king and then tried earnestly to understand his duties. He had trouble, however, in making sense of economics. The more his experts explained it to him, the more confused he became. Finally, in disgust, he ordered their silence and demanded a ten-word explanation of economics. At this point, a courtier spoke up saying, "Your Majesty, I can explain economics in nine words. It is simply this: there is no such thing as a free lunch." Exactly so. Many of our world problems today stem from a failure to understand that there is no such a thing as a free lunch: somebody always pays for it by his work, money, or taxes. We will not solve our educational and welfare problems until we recognize this fact.
But the same is true in religion: there is no such thing as free salvation. When the Bible speaks about freedom, it does not mean "without cost"; rather, its meaning is usually "without restraint or obligation," or else "freed from slavery." Thus, when we are told in Galatians 5:1 that "with freedom did Christ set us free," it means that, without any obligation compelling Him to do so, Christ of His grace freed us from the slavery of sin and death.
It is a falsification of Scripture to say that it was "free" in the modern sense, that is, without cost or price. We are emphatically told that we "are bought with a price" (1 Cor. 6:20; 7:23); this price was the "blood of Christ" (1 Pet. 1:19). It was not a costless salvation but rather the most costly one imaginable, requiring the death of the only begotten Son of God. It was a gift to us, and a very costly gift.
Moreover, because we have been "bought with a price," we must therefore glorify God in our body and spirit, because they have been bought by God at a fearful price and therefore belong to Him (1 Cor. 6:20). For this reason the Lord, both as our Creator and our Redeemer, can command us to take up the cross of self-denial and follow Him (Matt. 10:38; 16:24).
There is thus no such thing as a free or costless salvation. Moreover, there can be no free or costless response to God's gift of salvation to us. We are required to thank and serve God with all our heart, mind, and being, and to give Him our tithes and offerings. In our relations with other men, the principle is to give without coercion or pressure: "[F] reely ye have received, freely give" (Matt. 10:8).
Freedom in the Biblical sense is always at a price; it is a costly gift, and it requires great things of us. When men seek salvation without a cost, they find damnation, and when they seek freedom without a price, they quickly become slaves.

The Faith of St. Patrick
I have a great affection and respect for St. Patrick, who, in the fifth century, was the great missionary to Ireland.
What made St. Patrick great when many men of far greater ability are today forgotten or barely known? There were many churchmen of far greater learning than Patrick, better trained for the job than he was, and in every human respect his superior. While Patrick was a superior man, if we had been living in his day, we would have picked a number of other men as far more likely to make their mark and achieve greatness.
There were, however, certain things which set Patrick apart. First of all, there was his faith. R.P.C. Hanson, in his book, St. Patrick, writes, "Patrick realizes perfectly well that God's providence is quite compatible with his meeting disaster and death. He is prepared for the worst to happen. His faith in God is not a faith that God will always work a miracle to save him, but a conviction that he can entirely trust God to bring about a good result whatever may happen, the faith of a man who has cast himself entirely on God." The Lord blessed that faith greatly.
Second, the church then and a century after Patrick was faced with savage barbarians invading the British Isles. Many churchmen feared and denounced these savages. St. Patrick worked to convert them.
Third, St. Patrick preaches both the wrath of god and God's redeeming and loving care. He was ready to denounce and excommunicate a tyrant without hesitation, but he was equally ready to speak often and joyfully about God's grace and mercy.
Fourth, it was said of St. Patrick that he was a man of one book, the Bible, not because he was an ignorant man, or one not versed in the thinking of his day, but because all his learning and experience were brought to focus on one thing, knowing and proclaiming the Word of God.
All this goes back to the first and foremost quality of St. Patrick, a man who "cast himself entirely upon God," and whose word to man was God's Word. St. Patrick knew that his God is the true and great God, Lord of all creation, and at all times he acted in the certainty of God's victory. Other men were more impressed by their obstacles and enemies and less impressed in practice by God, and, despite their great abilities, they failed to accomplish what St. Patrick did.
What impresses you the most, God or your problems? Why not follow St. Patrick in his trust in God?

INFERENCIAS Y LA LEY (English)

INFERENCES AND THE LAW
One of the "problems" with God, for many people, is that He gives His creature man too much freedom - the freedom to sin, to think, and to make decisions. As far as most people, churches, and civil governments are concerned, this is wrong. they want laws to govern every area of life and thought. I get letters from time to time written by people who question the validity of God's law because, they tell me, there is so much in the modern world which is not covered by the few pages of Biblical law (some 600 plus laws only). Such people want a totalitarian set of laws to control everything! Where God is silent, they impose laws through church or state, or in their personal domain.
But God's law has limits! Man seeks a total law, where god does not, even though He is the absolute Sovereign and Creator. God does not present His law as the salvation of man and society but as the way of holiness. This is a very different thing.
In understanding God's law, we must recognize, first, that much of it is a case law. The classic instance of this, used by Scripture to show us its meaning, is Deuteronomy 25:4, "Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn." This minimum example sets forth the fact that, even with an animal, the laborer is worthy of his hire (1 Cor. 9:9; 1 Tim. 5:18). This means that specially to those who labor worthily in Christ's work double "honor" or pay should be given (1 Tim. 5:17).
Another case law is found in Deuteronomy 21:18-21, the case of an incorrigible son. Those who are hostile to God's law insist on reading "son" as a baby. the age is not specified, but what is clearly intended is what we call an incorrigible and habitual criminal. the point made is that a family must side with God's law against its own flesh and blood, if necessary, and society hence must not hesitate to execute habitual criminals.
Case law give us clear statements about the application of God's law.
Second, God's law does not always require a man-imposed sentence. We are told that God's penalties for failure to tithe are severe (Mal. 3:8-12), but not human agency is given any right to enforce the tithe. Deuteronomy 25:4 (cited above) is very important, but again, god reserves to Himself the power to punish as well as to bless. A very considerable percentage of the 600-plus laws of God call for no punishment by man, the church, the state or any human agency! However, man's original sin is his desire to to be his own god and to determine his own law (Gen. 3:5), and, as a result, man strives in every area sphere to impose a totalitarian law. This totalitarian tendency is present in every sphere of life today, with ugly results. Man want a totally prescribed life, and the power of total prescription for themselves.
In recent years, with serious problems in the Catholic Church and in Protestant churches, many distressed members have come together to set up organizations to recall the church to its faith, or to establish new or continuing church bodies. Very commonly, these groups have serious problems which end in their dissolution. The most common problem is a desire to over-control everyone, beginning often with compilation of voluminous by-laws which often break up the group! They want a totally prescriptive governing document and thereby in effect deny the power of the Holy Spirit. For them, safety lies in full controls, not in the Third Person of the Trinity.

THE LUST FOR INSTANT GRATIFICATION
"Forty years ago, as a missionary on an isolated Indian Reservation, I was quickly impressed by two things. First, the Indians had a high order of intelligence and ability; in aptitudes, they had a superior potential. Second, in performance, they were inferior, and ,in fact, at the bottom level economically in the U.S., and also in other areas ranked very low.
I noticed too that I never heard a crying Indian baby or child. Whatever sign the baby made of unhappiness led to immediate gratification. In talking with missionaries from a variety of foreign fields, among so-called primitives, a like pattern was presented in these places also, I was told.
I recognized soon that Biblical faith creates a radically different pattern of life. First, our lives must then be God-centered: 'Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him for ever,' as the Shorter Catechism declares. This militates against self-gratification. Second, to affirm that the final and full reckoning for all men is beyond time and history in heaven and hell is to declare that our hunger for righteousness or justice, as well as for blessing and rewards, can never have its fullness in this world. It will, however, finally have perfect fulfillment. This postponement of gratification imposes a discipline upon all of us. It also creates a different frame of reference for child-rearing.
What once marked the so-called primitive cultures now marks the Western World. We have seen the child-center society create a student generation in revolt, demanding instant gratification in politics, economics, sex, and in drugs. That temper has also created an aborting society: no problems or inconvenience now, only sudden death for the disruptive unborn child.
In a generation which lusts for instant gratification, there are no solutions to problems, only executions. The demand for gratification now denies the validity of time and growth, and therefore of history. It copes with problems by revolution, by the mass murders of all whom it blames for the problems. The doctrine of heaven and hell affirms the reality of history and development.
The lust for instant gratification is a child of Rousseau and a father to revolution. It is ultimately an indictment of God for requiring man to suffer and to grow. More than two centuries ago, Thomas Boston, in Human Nature in its Fourfold State, called attention to the foolish belief of some that they could 'leap out of Delilah's lap into Abraham bosom.' The premise behind this, he held, was 'a shelter to wickedness of heart and life.'
The only real fulfillment of the lust for instant gratification is in personal and social suicide, because it is in its essence sin from start to finish."

Hope
"During this past month, in the course of my travels, I spent several hours visiting with an outstanding conservative leader, a man who is a major force in one of our most notable anti-communist organizations. In the first few minutes, he raised the question: 'Do you see any hope?' Many ask this same question. I am reminded of the question asked of Adoniram Judson (1788-1850), pioneer American Baptist missionary in Burma. Hostile forces soon succeeded in destroying Judson's mission, his converts, printing press, and his possessions. Judson himself was thrown into a filthy Burmese prison, and, with arrogant humor, asked by a captor, 'How are your prospects now?' 'As bright as the promises of God,' responded Judson, who lived to see those promises fulfilled in the success of his mission. Our prospects are also as bright, if our confidence is in the same omnipotent God.
The revolution in our day rests on certain anti-Christian premises: First, it is held that anything goes, because there is no God. No God means no law, and no law means that nothing is a crime, and hence all acts are equally valid. Second, by 'outlawing' God and declaring Him to be non-existent, the revolutionaries outlaw the idea of good and evil. They are supposedly beyond good and evil. If good is mythical, then evil is also, and man cannot be evil! Therefore, whatever the world -planners do cannot be evil, because evil does not exist: it is simply either a successful scientific experiment, or it is a failure. Third, because God is abolished as a myth, the approach to man's problems must be scientific, that is, experimental, and man is thus the prime laboratory test animal. In school, your children are to be objects of experimentation, even as you are also by means of every communication media. There is no evil in such experimentation, since there is no God, but only success or failure. Fourth, every experiment, to be valid, requires total control of all factors. Hence, the scientific society must be totalitarian to the full measure, or it will not work.
The various phases of this vast attempt to turn the world from God's creation to the scientific planner's re-creation can be documented in detail. It has been done by the volume. The answer, however, is not in facts and knowledge but in a restoration of Christian faith.
Because God is God, and because He will not allow Himself to be dethroned, the scientific planners are doomed. This judgement is a certainty because God cannot allow sin to go unpunished. All sin is either atoned for, or punished. The question is whether we will be among those judged, or among those, the saved remnant, who shall undertake even now the task of reconstruction."

THE IMAGE OF GOD IN MAN
"The Westminster Shorter Catechism, Q. 10, asks, 'How did God create man?' and answers, 'God created man male and female, after His own image, in knowledge, righteousness, and holiness, with dominion over the creatures' (Gen. 1:27f.; Col. 3:10; Eph. 4:24).
Centuries earlier, the Jewish commentator, Joseph Kimhi (1105?-1170?), had written: "Image is dominion and likeness is rulership, not a physical image." This interpretation goes back at least to Saadia Gaon's translation of the Torah and is the ancient understanding of the meaning of the image of God.
Fallen man, of course, seeks an ungodly dominion and rule, one in defiance of God and His law. However, the obvious implication of regeneration is that the man in Christ is renewed in godly dominion and into rule under God. For him to fail to exercise such dominion is a sin.
The ancient interpretation of the creation of man is that Genesis 1:26 says, 'And God said, Let us make man in our image (i.e., dominion), after our likeness (rulership): and let them have dominion." Dominion is thus a requirement God makes of us in our very creation . In our regeneration, this requirement is again in force. Just as the judgment of God fell on Adam for a false concept of dominion, so it will fall on us if we deny the dominion mandate.
Our Lord requires it in the Great Commission: we must disciple all nations, 'teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.' In this task, we serve the Lord to whom 'all power is given... in heaven and in earth' (Matt. 28:18-20).
We cannot reject dominion and rule without rejecting our Lord's calling."

¿o qué tienes que no has recibido? (I Cor.4: 7)."

THE NEW RACISM
Racism is a relatively new fact on the world scene. In earlier eras, not race but religion was the basis of discrimination. Although religious history has been marred by ugly violence against other religious groups, and the history of the Christian Church is no exception to this, there is a notable fact which is often forgotten. Missionary faiths, and supremely Christianity, normally seek to win other groups, not oppress them, and this missionary impulse has also provided, in many eras, a favorable cause for a friendly approach.
In the modern era, as Christianity's influence receded, and science began to govern together with humanism, biology came to predominate over theology. The differences between men were seen increasingly as biological and racial rather than religious. The earlier physical anthropologists made very precise and detailed physical studies of all peoples in order to establish the physical differences between races.
The theory of evolution fueled this developing scientific racism and added still another important factor. Many theories began to hold to a multiple origin for the human race. Whereas in Scripture all men are descendents of Adam, in evolutionary thought, all men are possibly descendents of very differing evolutionary sources. Common descent in Adam meant a common creation, nature, and responsibility under God. The idea of multiple origins proved divisive. The human race was no longer the human race! It was a collection of possibly human races, a very different doctrine.
It is important to recognize that racism was in origin a scientific doctrine... The defeat of the Nazis did not end racism. Instead, it has again become respectable and widespread. We must remember that studies of Hitler's Germany indicate that his support came from liberals, democrats, socialists, and the intellectual community. Scholars like Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddihn have ably exposed the myth of a conservative or rightist origin for Hitler's support. The fact of Hitler's antipathy to Christianity helped enlist support for him.
...The Western mind, common to Europe and the Americas, is a product not of race, but of culture, religious culture. Elements of it, none too good, go back to the barbarian peoples of Europe. Other aspects are from Greek philosophy, again none too good. (The Greeks described all non-Greeks as barbarians on cultural, not racist, grounds. They gave brilliant and inventive slaves a Greek name and status.) The Western mind and culture, in all its advances, is a product of Biblical religion. It is a religious, not a racial, product.
...The words of Paul are a sharp rebuke to all who want men to glory in their blood, race, or history: 'For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?' (I Cor.4:7)."

The Praying Christian: God's Warrior
"Many Christians are living a powerless and ineffective life because of a poor prayer life. They have feeble expectations because they have a feeble concept of a sovereign God, who eagerly waits to pour out His blessings to a people, who are bold enough to pray as they are commanded in Scripture.
Prayer is a blessed means whereby we fellowship with an almighty and loving Father, who eagerly awaits such communion with His children. Biblical praying is the channel through which the very power of God is unleashed in our lives and in the world. The reason so few of us pray as we ought is because we do not fully understand what prayer is all about, because we are so weak in our faith, because we are not sold out to His plan for the world, and because we do not pursue after that which we are commanded.
Prayer and God's Perfections
The importance of sound doctrine as a basis of a sound prayer life cannot be overstated. Faulty views of God will inevitably cause us to pray wrongly and experience unanswered prayers, leaving us frustrated. If we are going to pray well, we must first learn correct theology. In this sense, all Christians are to strive to be theologians.
What are the important doctrinal truths, which enable a Christian to experience powerful and effective praying? Prayer must be rooted in our accurate concept of God's perfections or characteristics. Though this is not an exhaustive list, some of God's perfections, which are vitally important, are: His sovereignty, His holiness, His goodness, His faithfulness, and His love.
A summary of hindrances to prayer
The following is a checklist for one to determine why some of his prayers are not granted, or why they are delayed. Before we pray, we should check this list so that we can boldly approach God's throne of grace.
A. Being a non-Christian; failing to repent and accept the appointed means of salvation (Isa. 59:1,2)
B. Harboring sin in our lives (Ps. 66:18)
C. Living a life of disobedience (Isa. 1:15)
D. Refusing to obey God's law (Zech. 7:8-13)
E. Despising God's law (Prov. 28:9)
F. Harboring an unforgiving spirit (Matt. 6:14,15)
G. Indulging self (James 4:3)
H. Failing to simply ask (James 4:2)
I. Failing to discern God's reveled will in His word (I John 5:14)
J. Doubting the promises of God (Mark 11:22-24)
K. Failing to persevere in prayer (Luke 18:1-8)
L. Failing to pray in Jesus' name (John 14:13)
M. Failing to pursue God's glory as our chief desire (I Cor. 10:31)
One of the greatest needs in Christ's church is for Christians to grasp the immense importance of maintaining a vital prayer life. We must become the warriors of God in this sense. The success of the Great Commission cannot be divorced from the prayers of God's people."
