Las Aflicciones

Si Dios es por nosotros, ¿quién contra nosotros?
           Romanos 8:31

No te desanimes por las dificultades y las oposiciones que se levantarán ante ti, cuando comiences a caminar con Dios determinadamente. Los desalientos apartan a multitudes de la religión, y proporcionan una gran tentación para muchos jóvenes principiantes a dar la vuelta. Israel en el desierto estaba listo para retirarse a Egipto. Dios mismo tendrá a sus siervos y sus gracias probados y ejercitados por las dificultades, y Satanás levantará rápidamente tormentas ante ti, tan pronto como salgas a la mar. Pero Dios está de tu lado y tiene a todos tus enemigos en su mano, y puede reprenderlos o destruirlos en un instante. ¡Oh qué es el aliento o la furia del polvo o los demonios, contra el Señor Todopoderoso! En el día que entraste en un pacto con Dios, y él contigo, entraste dentro de la roca y la fortaleza más impenetrable, y protegido tú mismo en un castillo de defensa, donde puedes (modestamente) desafiar a todos los poderes adversos de la tierra o el infierno. Si Dios no te puede salvar, él no es Dios. Y si él no te salvará, debe romper su pacto. En efecto, él puede estar resuelto a salvarte, no de la aflicción y la persecución, pero en ella, y por ella. Pero en todas estas cosas tú serás 'más que vencedores por medio de aquel que nos amó "(Ro. 8:37). Es mucho más conveniente y excelente vencer por la paciencia, en el sufrimiento de Cristo, que vencer a tus perseguidores en el campo, por la fuerza de las armas. Oh piensa en las jactancias triunfantes de los santos en su Dios: "Dios es nuestro amparo y fortaleza, nuestro pronto auxilio en las tribulaciones" (Salmo 46:1). Si todo el mundo estuviera de tu lado, todavía podrías tener causa para temer. Pero tener a Dios de tu lado es infinitamente más. Cristo, el Capitán de tu salvación ha ido por este camino antes, y ahora se dedica a hacerte un vencedor. No tengas miedo cuando Cristo está liderando el camino. No retrocedas cuando veas sus huellas y su sangre.

Afflictions

                       If God is with us, who can be against us?
                                          Romans 8:31

Do not be discouraged at the difficulties and oppositions that will rise up before you when you begin resolvedly to walk with God. Discouragements turn multitudes from religion, and provide a great temptation for many young beginners to turn back. Israel in the wilderness was ready to retreat to Egypt. God himself will have his servants and his graces tried and exercised by difficulties, and Satan will quickly raise up storms before you, as soon as you are set out to sea. But God is on your side and has all your enemies in his hand, and can rebuke them, or destroy them in a moment.O what is the breath or fury of dust or devils, against the Lord Almighty! In the day you entered into a covenant with God, and he with you, you entered into the most impregnable rock and fortress, and covered yourself in a castle of defence, where you may (modestly) defy all adverse powers of earth or hell. If God cannot save you, he is not God. And if he will not save you, he must break his covenant. Indeed, he may resolve to save you, not from affliction and persecution, but in it, and by it. But in all these things you will 'overwhelmingly conquer through him who loved us' (Rom 8:37). It is far more desirable and excellent to conquer by patience, in suffering for Christ, than to conquer your persecutors in the field, by force of arms. O think on the saints' triumphant boastings in their God: 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble' (Psa. 46:1). If all of the world were on your side, you might yet have cause to fear. But to have God on your side is infinitely more. Christ the Captain of your salvation has gone this way before you, and now he is engaged to make you a conqueror. Do not be afraid where Christ is leading the way. Do not draw back when you see his steps and his blood.

    Ofrecer el sacrificio de alabanza _ haciéndolo incluso cuando no nos da ganas de hacerlo _ nos acerca hacía la presencia del Señor. La alabanza reconoce nuestra debilidad y la suficiencia de Dios. La alabanza da cabida en nuestros corazones para que la voluntad de Dios sea hecha, y quita cualquier motivación que podamos tener para manipular a Dios. La alabanza nos pone en un estado de ánimo apropiado para acercarnos a Dios. Aumenta nuestra fe para traer las peticiones a Dios. La alabanza debe ser central en nuestra vida de oración. Pueda que desees tratar una letanía de alabanza una vez, y otra vez tener ofrendas espontáneas de alabanza sobre los aspectos del carácter de Dios, ser u obras que el Espíritu trae a tu mente. En otra ocasión, pueda que desees alabar a Dios por las cosas que sus nombres o atributos traen a la mente, las cuales ayudan a animar nuestra fe.

Praise

Praise the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, praise His holy name." (Psalm 103:1)

   Offering the sacrifice of praise _ doing it even when we don't feel like it _ draws us into the presence of the Lord. Praise acknowledges our weakness and God's sufficiency. Praise makes room in our hearts for God's will to be done, and takes away any motivations we might have to manipulate God. Praise puts us into a proper frame of mind to approach God. It increases our faith to bring petitions to God. Praise should be central to our prayer life. You might want to try a litany of praise one time and another time have spontaneous offering of praise concerning aspects of God's character, being or works that the Spirit brings to your mind. On another occasion you might want to praise God for the things that His names or attributes bring to mind, both of which help to encourage our faith.

   Here is a list of a few of God's names. As you address God by each name, offer up one to three sentences of the things you appreciate about God that are implied in that name.

Elohim, The Almighty Creator
El Elon, The God Most High
El Roi, The God Who Sees
El Shaddai, the All-Sufficient One
Adonai, The Lord
Jehovah (or Yahweh), The Self-Existent One

   Here is a list of God's attributes. As you think about the implications of each attribute, it will stimulate many reasons to adore and praise God. During one time of praise you can focus on the implications of one attribute. During another time of praise you can go through each attribute. During another time of praise you can adore God for how one attribute impacts and gives meaning to every other attribute. During another time of praise you can use various attributes to thank and praise God that this makes Him sufficient for all the needs that you will be offering up to Him in a few minutes.

Omnipresence - God is present everywhere (Psalm 139:8).
Omniscience - God is all knowing (1 Jn. 3:20; Rom. 16:27).
Oneness - monotheism: God is oneness of being (Deut. 6:4; Eph. 4:6).
Simplicity - God's unity of singularity4 or not composed of parts and pieces; no dualism.
Sovereignty/Lordship - God alone is fully free and He alone controls and directs all things; nothing can hinder Him from accomplishing His full pleasure (Is. 46:10)
Transcendence - God is outside of time and space and unable to be controlled or limited by any forces in the universe (1 Kings 8:27). See comments on Immanence Is. 57:15 brings both together.
Trinity - God is three in one - Three Persons but one God (Matt. 28:19).
Veracity - God is truthful in all He says (Tit. 1:2) and therefore can be completely trusted (2 Sam. 22:3).
Wrath - God´s hatred and anger against all that is opposed to His moral character (Ex. 15:7; Deut. 9:19; Ps. 69:24; John 3:36).5

1 This is one of the most fundamental of all God's attributes. The attribute of Aseity means that God has no needs (Acts 17:25) and since God is completely self-sufficient, it is impossible for Him to be selfish or self-centered. Instead, the Father loves and gives of Himself entirely to Son and Spirit, and the Son loves and gives of Himself entirely to Father and Spirit, and the Spirit gives of Himself entirely to the Father and Son. It is God's aseity that leads to God's self-giving to us. But it is also why each Person of the godhead delights in praising the other members of the God head, and calls us to praise and adore them.
2 On the fundamental importance of this attribute, and on how it colors every other attribute, consider the fact that it is the only one that is repeated three times -"holy, holy, holy" (Is. 6:3; Rev. 4:8). Sproul says, "only once in sacred Scripture is an attribute of God elevated to the third degree... The Bible never says that God is love, love, love" R.C. 3 God's immanence and transcendence help us to avoid heresy. To hold to immanence and not transcendence can lead to pantheism. To hold to trancendence and not immanence can lead to Deism.
4 This means that God's attributes are not parts of God that can be divided. God is a unity that is indivisible and each Person is all of God and each attribute characterizes all of God. Theologians speak of this as a "unity of singularity."

Peter F. Drucker, uno de nuestros pensadores más brillantes y estimulantes, escribe al comienzo de su estudio La Edad de la Discontinuidad: Pautas para Nuestra Sociedad Cambiante que "el futuro es, por supuesto, siempre 'país de guerrilla' en la que los incautos y los aparentemente insignificantes descarrilan las tendencias masivas y aparentemente invencibles de hoy." El sentido en que Drucker usa esta expresión es inteligente y comprensible. Para mucha gente, sin embargo, todo es sombrío y feo en el futuro; todo es país de guerrilla, y todo escollos. El futuro sólo tiene más inflación, la amenaza comunista, la vejez y la enfermedad, y cada vez mayores problemas. Bueno, tampoco estoy haciéndome más joven; la inflación está empeorando, y los comunistas son una amenaza más potente cada año, pero yo no puedo ver el futuro como país de guerrilla.

Por otra parte, la Palabra de Dios, que no puede mentir, declara que "a los que aman a Dios, todas las cosas les ayudan a bien, esto es, a los que conforme a su propósito son llamados" (Ro. 8:28).

   Nuestro verdadero problema no son los enemigos que acechan en nuestro futuro; nosotros somos el problema y nuestra apostasía de Dios. Hemos abandonado a Dios, despreciado sus leyes, y buscado nuestros propios caminos en desacato a Él. Es a Dios a quien debemos amar y obedecer, a quien debemos temer, porque es a Él a quien más hemos ofendido.

   De acuerdo a Deuteronomio 28, si obedecemos a Dios, somos bendecidos y protegidos en todos nuestros caminos; si le desobedecemos, entonces estamos bajo su maldición, y todo se convierte en territorio de guerrilla para nosotros, tierra extranjera donde nos enfrentamos a fuerzas hostiles.

   Como San Pablo declaró "Si Dios es por nosotros, ¿quién contra nosotros?" (Ro. 8:31). Pero si Dios está en contra de nosotros, ningún aliado puede protegernos. En este mundo, vamos a tener enemigos; será mejor que nos aseguremos de que Dios no es uno de ellos. Entonces el mundo será totalmente país de guerrilla. Pero si caminamos por la fe y en obediencia a su ley, este es entonces el mundo de nuestro Padre, y nosotros somos en Cristo herederos del mismo.

Guerrilla Country

   Peter F. Drucker, one of our most brilliant and stimulating thinkers, writes at the beginning of his study The Age of Discontinuity: Guidelines to Our Changing Society that "the future is, of course, always 'guerrilla country' in which the unsuspecting and apparently insignificant derail the massive and seemingly invincible trends of today." The sense in which Drucker uses this expression is intelligent and understandable. For too many people, however, everything is bleak and ugly; it is all guerrilla country, and all pitfalls. The future holds only more inflation, the Communist menace, old age and sickness, and ever-increasing troubles. Well, I too am not growing younger; inflation is growing worse, and the Communists are more powerful threat each year, but I cannot see the future as a guerrilla country.
   God is not dead, nor have the centuries weakened Him. The government of the world is still upon the shoulders of our God and His Christ (Isa. 9:6), and nothing can change that fact. Moreover, God's Word, which cannot lie, declares that "all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose" (Rom. 8:28).
   Our real problem is not the enemies lurking in our future; we are the problem and our apostasy from God. We have forsaken God, despised His laws, and pursued our own ways in contempt of Him. It is God whom we should love and obey, whom we need to fear, because it is He whom we have most offended.
   According to Deuteronomy 28, if we obey God, we are blessed and protected in all our ways; if we disobey Him, then we are under His curse, and everything becomes guerrilla territory to us, alien ground where we are faced with hostile forces.
   As St. Paul stated it, "If God be for us, who can be against us?" (Rom. 8:31). But if God is against us, no ally can protect us. In this world, we will have enemies; we had better make sure God is not one of them. The world then will be totally guerrilla country. But if we walk by faith and in obedience to His law, this is then our Father's world, and we are in Christ heirs of it.

La Fe

  Conozco a dos mujeres, parientes una al otra, que son ambas abiertamente cristianas. La primera habla a menudo de su fe como su posesión más preciada, su consuelo y su gozo. Yo si creo que ella es cristiana, pero su fe para ella es como seguro de vida y contra incendios. Ella tiene la fe más que la fe la tiene a ella. Por otro lado, la fe tiene a su prima en sus garras.    La fe debe apuntar más allá de sí misma, porque "la fe es la certeza de lo que se espera, la convicción de lo que no se ve" (Heb. 11:1) Esto significa que el hombre de fe es mandado por algo más allá de sí mismo. La meta de la salvación no es nuestra redención, sino que la voluntad de Dios sea hecha, y su Reino sea manifestado. La salvación requiere que sirvamos a Dios con todo nuestro corazón, nuestra mente y nuestro ser y a nuestro prójimo como a nosotros mismos.

Faith

   I know two women, kin to one another, who are both openly Christian. The first often speaks of her faith as her most precious possession, her comfort and her joy. I do believe that she is a Christian, but her faith is like fire and life insurance to her. She has the faith more than the faith has her. On the other hand, the faith has her cousin in its grip. Since her conversion, I suspect she has often been unhappy with what the faith requires of her. She can at times echo, I am sure, Jeremiah's statement that God's Word is "in my heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones" (Jer. 20:9).
   The difference between the two is that one is a no-growth person and the other, whether she likes it or not, grows in the faith. When the faith is more than a possession but a fire in our being that possesses us, we are governed by it. It commands and compels us as nothing else can, because we are in the hands and power of the living Lord.
   Faith must point beyond itself, because "faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Heb. 11:1) This means that the man of faith is commanded by something beyond himself. The goal of salvation is not our redemption but that the will of God be done, and His Kingdom manifested. Salvation requires that we serve God with all our heart, our mind, and our being, and our neighbor as ourselves.

Tiempos Feroces

  

Una y otra vez, los apóstoles usan la expresión "los últimos días" o "los últimos tiempos", y lo que se entiende por lo general es la era desde la primera venida de Cristo hasta su regreso. Estos son los últimos tiempos, dice Pedro (1 P. 1:20) y también Juan (1 Juan 2:18), por ejemplo.    Por lo tanto, Pablo advierte a Timoteo y a todos los cristianos que la vida es ahora una batalla abierta; porque Cristo ha venido, los poderes del mal están formados en su contra con odio intenso.

   El mismo Pablo enfrentó esta ferocidad, incluso de antiguos compañeros. De todos modos, él pudo decir: "[E]l Señor me librará de toda obra mala" (2 Ti. 4:18), porque sólo Cristo es el Señor de todo. Él es el vencedor, y nosotros somos victoriosos en Él.

Ferocious Times

   Again and again, the apostles use the expression "last days" or "last times," and what is usually meant is the era from Christ's first coming to His return. These are the last times, says Peter (1 Pet. 1:20) and also John (1 John 2:18), for example. This helps us to understand what Paul means in 1 Timothy 4:1, " Now the Spirit speaks expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils." This is to explain to timothy why two notable leaders, Hymenaeus and Alexander, had left the faith (1 Tim. 1:20, 4:1). With the coming of Christ, the battle between good and evil has intensified, and men are now "{w]ithout natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good," and given to every evil (2 Tim. 3:3), and in these "last days perilous times shall come" (2 Tim. 3:1).
   The word "trucebreakers" means unwilling to live in faithfulness to treaties, and it has reference to international affairs. In both personal and political life, men will use words to deceive, and truthfulness will be despised.
   The result will be "perilous times," or, more literally, ferocious times. The forms of civilization clothe evil in all its ferocity and malice, its hatred of righteousness. Underneath the forms stands the new, the greater, evil_the civilized barbarian.
   Thus, Paul warns Timothy and all Christians that life is now an open battle; because Christ has come, the powers of evil are arrayed against Him with intense hatred.
   Paul himself faced this ferocity, even from former associates. All the same, he could say, "[T]he Lord shall deliver me from every evil work" (2 Tim. 4:18), because only Christ is Lord over all. He is the victor, and we are victorious in Him.
